Classes at The Yoga Room are designed to begin your practice where you are today. You don’t have to be flexible or athletic to start the practice – that’s why we are here to help you!

Introductory Course

This 4-week course walks students through the basics of a yoga practice. We will cover the fundamentals of breath and movement beginning with standing poses. Variations of all poses will be introduced to ensure that all postures are accessible to everyone.

Level 1

This class is the perfect choice for students new to Iyengar yoga or students looking to build a stronger foundation in their practice. Beginning poses are both challenging and revealing. This class focuses on classical standing poses, seated poses, inversions, and restorative poses. The poses that are learned in this course are a necessary foundation for all of our other courses. Students are recommended to remain at this level for 4-8 months.

Level 2

A firm foundation in all the postures at the previous level is required. Knowledge and practice of inversions and/or alternative, supplemental postures are required. Students should be practicing at home regularly who attend this level class and should have basic knowledge of the Sanskrit names for each posture. At this level students are encouraged to read the philosophy of yoga to help further their growth and understanding of yoga beyond just an asana practice. Readings from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are incorporated at this level. Students are recommended to stay at this level for a minimum of two years.

Gentle Yoga

Gentle Yoga is an ideal class for active seniors and students that prefer a class with a relaxed pace.  Gentle Yoga is a powerful antidote to being “stressed out,” weakened or fatigued. Allowing the body to be supported in different Yoga poses, both active and restorative postures, with conscious breathing brings balance in one’s energy and a clear calmness to one’s mind.

Restorative Yoga

This class is designed to address physical and emotional fatigue of daily life by incorporating relaxation and breathing techniques. With an emphasis on personal attention, sequences are modified to accommodate individuals’ varying needs.

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga is a method of Hatha Yoga developed over a period of over 60 years by Mr. B.K.S Iyengar of Pune, India. Iyengar’s teachings are deeply grounded in the ancient yoga tradition. His own experience practicing and teaching has produced some significant improvements and the principles of Iyengar Yoga are compatible with the modern science of physical therapy.

Iyengar Yoga places special focus on developing strength, endurance, and correct body alignment while maintaining flexibility and encouraging relaxation. Iyengar yoga teaches correct alignment of the spine and limbs in all the poses. Many common ailments including back and neck pain, poor digestion, tension, fatigue, menstrual problems, and arthritis are prevented or relieved by the regular practice of yoga. Placing no emphasis on goals, students are instead encouraged to finely tune the manner in which they move. The focused concentration that is required to observe your body allows you to take your attention inward, bringing quietness and integration to the mind/body.
